Shillong, June 10: The district administration is likely to take a call on Monday whether to continue or lift the suspension of internet service on mobile phones.
Internet service was suspended since June 1 after trouble mongers spread various kinds of rumours on the issue related to Them ïew Mawlong after three persons were assaulted on May 31 morning following an argument between a bus driver and a woman residing at Them ïew Mawlong over the parking of a bus there.
However in the evening of May 31, rumours spread like wild fire through social media especially whatsapp and facebook claiming that one of the injured persons had passed away. The spread of fake news was one of the reasons that caused a volatile situation where angry mob gathered at Motphran and engaged in a standoff with security force over the demand to shift settlers from Thew ïew Mawlong.
East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner, P.S. Dkhar on Sunday said that no decision has been taken yet to lift the suspension of internet service, and the matter may be again discussed on Monday.
The district administration is also monitoring and assessing the whole law and order situation as normalcy has returned at Motphran area and the city.
On Sunday, relaxation of curfew in areas under Lumdiengjri police station which include Jaïaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Mawprem, Lumdiengjri, Lamavilla, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment, Mawlong Hat including areas under Cantonment Beat House (excluding localities beyond Umshyrpi bridge) was from 7 am to 6 pm.
Similarly, night curfew in the whole of Shillong city was imposed from 9 pm on Sunday to 5 am on Monday.
Asked if curfew would be further relaxed, Dkhar said that the district administration would also take a call on this on Monday after assessing the whole situation.
“We are assessing the law and order situation on a daily basis, based on which, a decision to relax the curfew timing or lift the curfew totally would be taken,†he said.
Dkhar informed that for Monday, the curfew timing remained unchanged as it was on Sunday in areas under Lumdiengjri police station, as well the timing of night curfew in the Shillong agglomeration.
The district administration may take a call on Monday to again relax the curfew timing for Tuesday.
