Shillong, April 18: The 17th Annual Conference of the Synjuk Ki Seng Rangbah Katholik Shillong Archdiocese was held at Assumption Parish, Nongpoh, bringing together senior male members (Rangbah longkpa) from across the Archdiocese.
The conference witnessed participation from eight zones under the Shillong Archdiocese and was formally inaugurated by State Minister Bah Sosthenes Sohtun, in the presence of Nongpoh MLA Bah Mayralborn Syiem. Hundreds of participants attended the opening day on April 17 under the leadership of Bah Richard Kahit, President of the Synjuk, along with Spiritual Director Rev. Fr. Andreas Pariat and Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Peter Syiemlieh of Nongpoh.
The central theme of the conference was drawn from the Biblical verse Epistle to the Galatians 6:9: “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
During a key session focusing on physical and spiritual well-being, family responsibility, and the role of fathers in society, Dr. John A. Lyngdoh from North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences delivered an impactful address.
In his speech, Dr. Lyngdoh highlighted the growing health concerns caused by unhealthy lifestyle habits, particularly the consumption of tobacco, alcohol, and substances like kwai (betel nut). He warned that addiction to smoking and such habits significantly shortens human lifespan and negatively impacts overall health.
He further noted that while entertainment such as movies and leisure activities are part of modern life, excessive indulgence can affect mental well-being and productivity. He stressed that individuals must maintain balance and avoid habits that harm both body and mind.
Dr. Lyngdoh urged people, especially the youth, to make wise life choices by staying away from harmful addictions and prioritizing health, education, and faith. He emphasized the importance of strong family values and unity in society, stating that collective responsibility and cooperation are essential for social progress.
He also underlined the crucial role of parents and community leaders in guiding the younger generation towards a disciplined and responsible life.
Concluding his address, Dr. Lyngdoh stated that such gatherings are meaningful and beneficial, as they help participants better understand contemporary challenges affecting both personal life and society.
