AICC is yet to approve Batyngshaiñ Ryngnga as candidate for Shella bypoll

Shillong Sept 24: The Congress has recommended the name of Batyngshaiñ Ryngnga as its candidate for the upcoming bye election to Shella constituency slated for October 21.

Ryngnga’s name was recommended by the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Election Committee during its meeting held in Shillong on Tuesday evening.

The name of Ryngnga has been recommended to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) for approval.

Ryngnga unsuccessfully contested the 2018 Assembly polls from Shella. He came third and polled 4,332 votes.

Besides, Ryngnga, former bureaucrat, Wilfred Khyllep, and member of District Council from Nongshken constituency, Grace Mary Kharpuri also applied for Congress ticket.

The BJP and People’s Democratic Front (PDF) are yet to decide whether to contest the bye election or not.

The bye election to Shella constituency is necessitated following the demise of United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and sitting Shella MLA, late Donkupar Roy on July 28.

Roy’s son, Balajied Synrem has been chosen as the UDP candidate.

An Independent candidate, Komen Laitmon has also decided to join the fray.

The bye election will be held on October 21, and counting of votes will take place on October 24.
