Ardent calls for strong state’s exchequer

Shillong, Dec 13: Opposition Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) leader Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit on Wednesday stressed on the need to plug leakage of revenue and ensure that the exchequer of the state is strong in order to be able to extend financial aids to all sections of the society apart from increasing the salary of government employees.

Taking part in the discussion moved by UDP legislator, Paul Lyngdoh on the need to extend financial benefits to school teachers, casual employees, daily wage earners and disadvantaged sections like widows and infirm in sync with the pay hike announced to state government employees, Basaiawmoit said that he hoped that the state government would try to win the government employees for the upcoming elections by implementing the pay revision.

Basaiawmoit also urged the government to ensure that its revenue is strong enough that it can also extend financial benefits to all sections of people including widows, informs, daily wage earners and farmers.

Stating that teachers are being used by the government for all kinds of work including election duty, Basaiawmoit said, “Teachers are considered as nation builders, but they have been left unattended.”

He was also of the view that the government should avoid deputing teachers for election duty.

He also urged the government to address the problems faced by those who are not in government jobs.

On leakage of revenue, Basaiawmoit said that there have been stories that people manning the checkgates were earning thousands and thousands in a day, an indication that there has been huge leakage of revenue.

He however said daily wage earners hardly earns 5000 to 6000 a month.

“Therefore, the government should address leakage of revenue and make sure that the state exchequer is strong enough for the interest of all sections of the society,” Basaiawmoit reiterated.
