Authorities asked to dismantle “illegal” mosque near Myntdu river

Shillong, Aug 25: The Meghalaya People’s United Front (MPUF) on Friday asked the district administration of West Jaintia Hills and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) to dismantle a mosque constructed “illegally” near the banks of Myntdu river.

In a statement issued here, MPUF president Dapoiwanmi Laloo said that the decision to urge the concerned authorities came after no action was initiated till date.

“The JHADC and the district administration should take necessary action by dismantling the structure as it is in violation of the order passed by the National Green Tribunal,” he said.

He also claimed that during a meeting with the headman of Tympang Club in June this year, it was informed that the Dorbar Shnong had not issued any no objection certificate (NOC) or permission for such construction along the banks of the river.

Earlier during the same month, the district administration had directed a local Muslim committee to stop the construction of a multi-storey building near the banks of Myntdu river without getting proper permission from the concerned authorities.

The DC in his order had stated that the order came up following voluntary disclosure by Jowai Muslim Committee president, Abdul Rahman Choudhury during the site inspection that the building was erected without proper sanction from the authorities concerned.

The construction tantamount to contravening with the provisions of the Meghalaya Building Bye-Laws 2011 and Town and Country Planning Act, he said.

The district administration had earlier imposed Sections 144 CrPC prohibiting any construction activities or releasing polluted waters into Myntdu river following the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order banning activities that could pollute the water.
