Shillong, Aug 25: The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) Nongthymmai Circle on Friday organized a signature campaign in the city to seek people’s support regarding its demand to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system and other anti-influx mechanisms to check influx into the state.
The campaign was part of the series of indefinite agitation under the “Save Hynñiewtrep Mission “and to express strong opposition against the Congress-led government’s that refused to discuss HYC’s 14-point of demands.
The signature campaign which was held at Firebrigade, Laitumkhrah witnessed active participation by people from all walks of life including elderly persons besides members of the HYC.
The HYC has rejected the implementation of comprehensive mechanisms as proposed by the state government to check influx and illegal immigration into the state, stating such mechanisms cannot be an alternative to ILP.
HYC Shillong City vice-president, John Lyngdoh asked the government not to provoke the activists of the HYC, who are now taking peaceful path of agitations.
Condemning the state government’s adamant attitude towards the demands put forth by the Council, Lyngdoh said that the government cannot blame HYC if the situation becomes worse in the state.
He also said that the Council would further intensify its agitations till the state government accedes to the HYC’s demand for putting in place strong laws that can protect the indigenous people and their land.
Under the “Save Hynñiewtrep Mission” which is conceptualized as a movement by the people for the people, the HYC is also seeking support of traditional institutions for implementing ILP and other laws in their respective jurisdiction.
