Shillong, Apr 20: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is positioning itself to become a significantly stronger political force in Meghalaya by 2028, with its national secretary and state in-charge Anil Antony expressing confidence in the party’s growing influence across the Northeast.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Antony said that the BJP’s steady expansion in the region over recent years reflects a broader shift in the political landscape. “In 2028, you can expect the BJP to be a much bigger political player in the state of Meghalaya also,” he said.
Highlighting the party’s progress, Antony noted that the BJP, which once had no representation in the Northeast, has now established a strong presence across the region. He pointed out that seven of the eight Northeastern states are currently governed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), including Meghalaya.
“In four states, the BJP is the largest party — Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Tripura — while in others the party continues to expand its footprint,” Antony said, adding that the BJP aims to become the number one party in Meghalaya as well.
On the postponed elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Antony said the party remains well-prepared and optimistic about improving its performance. He stated that the BJP had been among the first to declare candidates ahead of the polls.
“In 29 seats, we have announced candidates in almost all constituencies except three or four. Our candidates are already on the ground. Last time, we had two seats there; this time, we will definitely improve our performance,” he said.
Antony’s remarks underline the BJP’s strategic focus on strengthening its base in Meghalaya as part of its broader push to consolidate political gains across the Northeast.
