Bridge Construction Disrupts Traffic: Police Seek Ambulance Access via Army Roads

Shillong, June 18: The ongoing construction of the Umshyrpi Bridge, which forms a critical part of the four-laning project of the Shillong-Dawki Road, is expected to take more time for completion. As part of the construction process, authorities imposed night-time restrictions on vehicle movement across the bridge from June 12 to June 15, between 10 PM and 5 AM.

However, police officials have confirmed that the construction work will continue. One official acknowledged the inconvenience, stating, “There is no other option. We have to face this temporary situation.

Due to the significant traffic congestion resulting from the restricted access, the Shillong Police have reportedly approached defence authorities with a request to permit ambulance movement through one of the army roads in the area. Currently, three army roads pass through the region:
1. From Rilbong to Mahadev Khola, traversing army territory.
2. From near the Dungeon Line to the old Anjalee petrol pump junction.
3. A shorter stretch from Rhino Point to Civil Hospital.

Civilians are typically not allowed to use these routes, as they fall under restricted military zones. However, in light of the severe traffic issues, residents and commuters are urging the state government to negotiate with the defence authorities to temporarily allow civilian access to these roads until the bridge construction is completed.

The authorities have yet to announce a definitive resolution to the ongoing traffic disruptions, but the public continues to hope for a temporary easing of movement restrictions through these alternative routes.
