Shillong,Aug.11: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma laid the foundation stone of the first ever Shillong Government College of Engineering at Shillong polytechnic campus on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said that the government is committed to take forward the legacy of Meghalaya being the centre of education, to create opportunities to pursue education in our state and it can only be achieved through initiative like these of having colleges and institutions of repute.
He urged upon all the stakeholders to create an enabling social environment for learning thereby attracting parents from other parts of the country to choose Meghalaya and to send their children for studies, with the diversity of the region will in turn boost tourism.
The project is funded under Rashtriya Uchchatar Skhisha Abhiyan (RUSA) and the sanction amount for the Engineering College is Rs 26 crore out of which ten percent would be borne by the state government.
The college of architecture and urban planning will come up at Tura.
