Shillong, June 22: Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma has asked the Northeast Frontier Railway to equip Mendipathar Railway Station in North Garo Hills with a facilitation center so that the authorities can verify people’s identity and check influx.
The directive came from the Chief Minister while the Khasi Students Union (KSU) is protesting against the construction of railway line in Khasi and Jaiñtia Hills, since the State government has not been able to come up with a strong mechanism to check influx.
“The Facilitation Center will serve as an alternative to ILP whereby the authorities can verify their identity and put a check illegal immigration,” the Chief Minister told NFR officials during his visit to Mendipathar Railway Station in North Garo Hills on Wednesday.
He also held a meeting with the Divisional Commercial Manager, N.F. Railway, Rangiya Division. The Chief Minister was accompanied by Additional Chief Secretary, in-charge Transport, Dr Shreeranjan and Commissioner of Transport, I. Ingty.
Interacting with the officials of N.F. Railway, the Chief Minister, said that the railway station should be equipped with a facilitation Center.
According to the Chief Minister, creating the facility in the railway station will enable the government to have a filtering mechanism and also ensure safety of the travelers.
The Chief Minister also suggested that the Facilitation Centre should have Help Desks and other comfort facilities like Café, eateries etc.
Later the Chief Minister and the railway officials inspected the site for setting up of the proposed Facilitation Centre.
