Shillong, May 1: A delay in informing the police has come under scrutiny in connection with the shocking incident in Mawhati, where a newborn baby was rescued alive after allegedly being buried under the soil.

According to sources, the incident occurred on April 27 (Monday) when a group of school students noticed slight movement beneath the ground in a particular area.

Upon closer inspection, they discovered a newborn infant showing signs of life. The students immediately alerted their teachers and local authorities.Members of the Dorbar Shnong, along with residents, rushed to the spot and carried out a rescue operation.

The infant, found in critical condition, was carefully retrieved and rushed to the Mawhati Primary Health Centre for emergency medical treatment.

While the rescue effort was swift, questions have been raised over the delay in notifying law enforcement. Local shnong representatives stated that the matter was first reported to the Rangbah Shnong (headman), who was expected to inform the police.

However, the police were only informed the following day, April 28, as the headman was reportedly out of station in Nongpoh at the time of the incident.

Police officials visited the site on April 30 to initiate an investigation and record statements as per procedure. Authorities are currently working to identify the mother or any individuals involved in the alleged act.

The incident has triggered widespread condemnation within the community, with residents terming it a cruel and inhumane act. At the same time, the prompt action and presence of mind shown by the school students—particularly the one who first identified and helped rescue the infant—have been widely appreciated.

Officials have urged members of the public to cooperate with the investigation and share any relevant information that may assist in identifying those responsible.
