East Jaiñtia Hills district police seize huge explosive, narcotic drugs, ganja

Shillong Oct 16: Police of East Jaiñtia Hills district have recovered multiple consignments of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances including huge explosives which include 45 packets of gelatin sticks weighed about 112.5 kg, 5,900 detonators packed in boxes, and around 133 metres detonating cord.

Police said that the consignments recovered in the district are highly dangerous and were being brought to Meghalaya from neighboring states.

Seizure of the consignments was made during a special operation conducted by a joint team of ANTF East Jaiñtia Hills, Khliehriat Police Station, Lumshnong Police Station and Ladrymbai Out Post on Wednesday and Thursday.

All commercial vehicles plying through the district from Silchar side were thoroughly checked.

The operation that started at around 3.00 pm on Wednesday to around 8.00 am on Thursday, led to the recoveries of explosives, narcotic drugs and ganja and others.

Police said that around 1 am on Thursday, one night super bus (AS-24C-2829) travelling from Karimganj towards Guwahati was intercepted at Khliehriat. During checking, 45 packets of gelatin sticks weighing approximately 112.5 Kg, 5900 detonators packed in boxes and approximately 133 meters detonating cord (Cordtex) were recovered from six bags belonging to two passengers travelling in the said bus.

Both the passengers have been arrested and during preliminary interrogation, they revealed that they were taking the explosives to Karbi-Anglong district of Assam. The particulars of the arrested persons are not being shared in the interest of investigation.

“In this connection, a case vide Khliehriat PS Case No. 161(10)19 u/s 5/6 of Explosive Substances Act 1908 R/W Sec 9-B of The Explosives Act, 1884 has been registered and investigation has started,” police said.

Police also informed that approximately at 2 am on Thursday, one night super bus (AS-01JC-0979) travelling from Agartala towards Guwahati was intercepted at Khliehriat and during checking, contraband items suspected to be Ganja weighing approximately 21 Kgs was recovered from two bags belonging to the below mentioned passengers travelling in the said bus.

In this connection, a case vide Khliehriat PS Case No. 162(10)19 u/s 8(c)/20(b)/29 NDPS Act has been registered and investigation has started. Both the passengers – Dharanveer Ray (33) and Prince Ray (18) from Bihar have been arrested.

During preliminary interrogation, they revealed that they purchased Ganja from Agartala and were taking it to Bihar for sale.

Moreover, police recovered heroin and nitrazepam on Wednesday at 4.20 pm after one commercial TATA sumo taxi (ML-04A-5229) travelling from Digorkhal towards Ladrymbai was intercepted at Byndihati village on NH-06.

During thorough checking, contraband items weighing approximately 0.74 grams suspected to be heroin and 260 mg of Nitrazepam tablets were recovered from the possession of Dashwamiki Lamare (30) who was travelling in the said vehicle.

In this connection, a case vide Khliehriat PS Case No. 160(10)19 u/s 8(c)/21(a)/22(a)/29 NDPS Act has been registered and investigation has started. The person has been arrested and during preliminary interrogation, he revealed that he purchased the items from Kalain, Assam for self-use as well as for sale.

The East Jaiñtia Hills district police have also arrested 19 foreign nationals mostly from Nigeria who had illegally entered India from Bangladesh after crossing the international border.

“All these cases are being thoroughly investigated in order to unearth the larger designs behind such activities,” the district police said.
