Shillong, March 08: Nomination papers were submitted on Thursday by the Meghalaya Congress of its candidate for the post of the speaker in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
State Congress Spokesperson, Zenith Sangma along with their candidate, Winnerson D Sangma, Nongthymmai, MLA Charles Pyngrope and Mawlai MLA, PT Sawkmie met the Meghalaya Assembly commissioner and secretary Andrew Simons and submitted the nomination papers to him. The decision of the Congress to nominate Winnerson was taken during a meeting called at the residence of the former chief minister, Mukul Sangma, on Wednesday. Talking to newsmen soon after filing the nomination papers, state congress spokesperson, Zenith Sangma said that he expecting to get a positive reaction from the members of the house on their candidate.
“We have submitted the two nomination papers. One is proposed by PT Sawkmie and one by me. The candidate is Winnerson D sangma,” said Zenith.
Asked about his expectations, Sangma said, “I am positive about our candidate and time will tell how much of support will he received from the house”.
Meanwhile, NPP-led ruling has opted for UDP Chief Donkupar Roy as its nominee for the post of the Speaker of the Assembly. The name of Roy as the nominee of MDA coalition was suggested as per the agreement arrived at by the coalition partners prior to the formation of the new government.
The NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance will seek vote of confidence in the House on Monday.On the same day, the election of the Speaker will also be held.
