Shillong,Sept. 09: Election of the new Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will be held on September 13.
This was announced by the deputy speaker Timothy D Shira during the Assembly here on Monday.
Shira said the filing of nomination papers before the commissioner & secretary and scrutiny is fixed on September 10 while withdrawal will be till 3.30 pm on September 11 and voting on September 13.
The election was necessitated after the death of Assembly Speaker and United Democratic Party chief late Dr Donkupar Roy.
The NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) has nominated UDP leader and cabinet minister Metbah Lyngdoh as the consensus candidate for the post while the opposition Congress will be fielding two-time legislator from Salmanpara Winnerson D Sangma.
The MDA comprising of six political parties, is having a strength of 40 in the 60-member House while the opposition with only 19.
