Groups oppose NHAI’s toll gates in Jaiñtia Hills

Shillong, Oct 19: Units of the Hynñiewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) and Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) from Jaiñtia Hills have strongly opposed the move of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to set up two toll gates in East Jaiñtia Hills district and West Jaiñtia Hills district.

The NHAI has proposed two locations for setting up of toll gates, one at 7th Mile in West Jaiñtia Hills district, and another at Lumshnong in East Jaiñtia Hills district.

According to leaders of Jaiñtia Hills Units of the two groups, the reason for opposing the move to build the toll gates was due to unsatisfactory expansion works done on the National Highway by the NHAI.

“We strongly opposed the setting up of these toll gates because works related to expansion of the highway was not satisfactory. The size of the road is more or less the same, but the NHAI has only repaired side drains besides black topping,” the leaders alleged.

They also said that roads in other states were more widened than the national highway in the region.
