Hailstones, storm damage hundreds of houses in Khasi Jaiñtia hills

Shillong, April 03: Hailstones and thunder storm accompanied by heavy rain have damaged hundreds of houses in Khasi and Jaiñtia hills of Meghalaya.

The roof of many houses were damaged by hailstones and strong wind in different districts but no casualty was reported.

The BDOs of various blocks are assessing the damage due to hailstones and storm.

Because of heavy rain in the last few days landslide was also reported in few places.
Due to heavy rain and wind many people preferred to remain indoors and many students did not go to school. Strong wind also affected power supply.
The districts affected by hailstones and storm include villages under Mawsynram community and rural development block, Mawphlang block and Mylliem block in East Khasi Hills district

Under Mawsynram block, severe damage of houses was reported  in villages under Dangngar and Phodstein circles. Over 350 houses were damaged in 16 villages by hailstone and storm.   

Over 300 houses were also damaged by hailstones in around 36 villages under Ranikor community and rural development block in South West Khasi Hills district.

In West Khasi Hills district also, hailstones and strong winds damaged several houses in villages under Mairang, Mawshynrut, Mawthadraishan community and rural development blocks.
In East Jaintia Hills district, houses suffered minor damages in 10 villages under Khliehriat block and 16 villages under Saipung block due to high wind.

Similarly, in Ri-Bhoi district, around 15 villages suffered minor damages of houses.
