Shillong, May 17: The Hynñiewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) has decided to launch anti-influx operation from next month.

Announcing this after a meeting held on Friday, HANM president, Lamphrang Kharbani said, the Anti-influx Operation Cell has been constituted to check outsiders who enters the state without any valid documents.

It will be headed by Bobby Basaiawmoit as chairman, John D Sangma as vice chairman and Nelson Kharbani as secretary.

“The anti-influx operation cell will start carrying out checking in Shillong from June 4 and those found without valid documents will be pushed back to their place of origin,” Kharbani told reporters.

He said that illegal immigrants from Bangladesh have managed to sneak and started capturing the livelihood activities of indigenous people adding “We do not want Meghalaya to face a Tripura-like situation.”

He also slammed the state government for its failure to come up with strong mechanisms to prevent illegal entry of outsiders. “This poses danger to the indigenous community. Therefore, we cannot wait for the government to wake up,” he said.

Meanwhile, the HANM has also warned heads of villages and localities not to issue ‘no objection certificate’ to outsiders for establishing businesses in the Khasi-Jaiñtia region.

Kharbani said, headmen should play their important role in preventing influx.
