SHILLONG, MAY 11: The upcoming high-speed corridor will bring major relief to commuters by cutting travel time and easing congestion, former cabinet minister and Khliehriat UDP legislator Kyrmen Shylla said on Monday, calling the project a “blessing” for East Jaintia Hills.

“This is not only for East Jaintia Hills alone, it is for the country as a whole,” Shylla said.

“Having this high-speed corridor passing through East Jaintia Hills is a blessing for my people and the people of Jaintia Hills. Wherever this project crosses, it is a blessing to all those areas.”

He said the new corridor would address long-standing issues with the current road.

“The existing road is quite small and narrow. By having this high-speed corridor it will reduce traffic congestion and for travelers coming to Shillong and Jaintia Hills, it will be very easy and very fast,” he noted. “It will bring a lot of change.”

Addressing concerns over land acquisition, Shylla said the government would ensure due compensation.

“When it comes to compensation for land, that is the commitment of the department and the government that the rights of people should not be taken. They have to get each and every penny which belongs to them,” he said.

He also praised the district administration’s role in the process.

“We have a deputy commissioner who is very active, and DCs in different areas have proactively done their jobs. I believe it will be done in a proper way and things could speed up,” Shylla added.
