Shillong, June 4: VPP candidate Ricky AJ Syngkon created history in terms of the highest winning margin (3,71,910 votes) in Shillong since 1972 whereas Saleng Sangma of the Congress could not break the record of Conrad Sangma who had contested and won Tura by-poll in 2016 following the death of PA Sangma.
Conrad had a victory margin of 1,92,212 votes whereas Saleng’s victory margin against Agatha Sangma is 1,55,241 number of votes.
However, Saleng’s win is unique as he could secure Tura’s seat which Purno Sangma and family members held for at least 45 years.
“The barrier is broken now”, said Congress leader from Garo Hills Deborah Marak referring to the victory of Congress in Tura.
From 1977, PA Sangma, Conrad Sangma, and Agatha Sangma had represented Tura.
For two years, from 1989, Sanford Marak represented Tura in Parliament.
In the current polls, Agatha could win only Ampati and Mahendraganj Assembly segments out of the 24 Assembly seats whereas the VPP candidate won in 32 Assembly segments out of 36. Pala won in Nongpoh and Jirang assembly segments, and Ampareen Lyngdoh succeeded in her East Shillong Assembly segment and South Shillong.
