SHILLONG, Jan 13: A home guard volunteer posted with the Shillong Traffic Police has been arrested after a video surfaced showing him extorting money from residents of Assam on the pretext of traffic rule violations.
The accused, identified as Reganson Kharlor (35), who was attached to the Madanrting Traffic Branch, allegedly stopped a Maruti Suzuki 800 (registration number AS-01-F-1460) on December 26, 2025. According to police, he threatened the occupants of the vehicle and initially demanded ₹1 lakh.
The vehicle occupants were later taken towards the Madanrting Taxi Stand, where Kharlor allegedly extorted ₹15,000 as an illegal ‘fine’. Two of the occupants reportedly withdrew the amount from a nearby ATM and handed it over to him.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said a suo motu case has been registered in connection with the incident. “The Home Guard volunteer has been arrested, removed from all duties and will be produced before the court as per procedure,” Syiem told reporters on Tuesday.
He added that the victims have been contacted and will be appearing before the police to record their statements. CCTV footage from the relevant locations is also being examined to establish the sequence of events.
Reiterating the police department’s stand, the SP said the East Khasi Hills District Police, including the Shillong Traffic Police, follow a zero-tolerance policy towards extortion, abuse of authority and any form of high-handedness, and are committed to ensuring public trust and service.
