Shillong,Jan 9: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) today demanded the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) not to grant No objection certificate (NOC) to the proposed setting up of a BSF’s battalion headquarter at Mawkyrwat.
In a joint memorandum submitted to the KHADC chief PN Syiem here on Tuesday, HYC-South West Khasi Hills District president Arbok Kharjahrin and HYC Mawkyrwat circle president Wanlam Nongsiej said, “We urged you not to grant NOC to prevent land owners from selling their lands to the BSF.â€
They informed that the Council strongly opposes the move following the public notice issued by the office of the Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills District informing about the intent of the BSF to acquire land in Mawkyrwat area.
The HYC leaders also alleged that if the BSF is allowed to acquire land, it would surely convert these lands into prohibited area or restricted area which will affect the local people.
“These lands will also be turned to cantonment area and they will no longer fall under the sixth schedule area,†they added.
