Incessant rain hits normal life, three persons injured as trees, walls collapse

Shillong, June 12: Normal life has been affected in the state following incessant rain during the last 24 hours, even as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya from Tuesday to Thursday.

Collapse of retaining walls, felling of trees in various parts of the Shillong City and rise of water level of Umkhrah river at Polo area was reported today.

One vehicle Maruti 800 (ML05-C-9222) was totally damaged after a tree fell on it while parking near Shillong Municipal office at around 4 pm. Three persons who were on the road at the time of the incident were injured.

At Malki area, a vehicle turned turtle after skidding off the road due to slippery of the road.

In certain parts of the city, areas like Polo, Pynthorumkhrah, Lyngkyrding, have been inundated due to continuous down pour since Sunday.

People also chose to remain indoors throughout the day.

Meanwhile the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning that heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya from Tuesday to Thursday. (June 13 to 15)

The IMD has also issued a wind warning whereby a strong surface with wind speed of 30 to 40 kmph gusting to 50 Kmph is very likely to prevail over Meghalaya on Tuesday.
