Shillong, June 11: James K. Sangma was on Thursday declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Meghalaya after no other candidate remained in the contest.

Speaking to reporters following the declaration of the results, Sangma expressed his gratitude to the Returning Officer, legislators, and members of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) for placing their trust in him. He said he was humbled by the responsibility entrusted to him and pledged to serve the people of Meghalaya with sincerity and dedication.

Sangma stated that his foremost responsibility as a Member of Parliament in the Upper House would be to raise issues concerning Meghalaya and ensure that the state’s voice is effectively represented in New Delhi. He noted that the position carries immense responsibility and offers an important platform to advocate for the interests of the people at the national level.

Among the key issues he intends to pursue is the long-standing demand for the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, along with several other matters related to the development and welfare of the state.

He further said that he would work with patience and perseverance to ensure Meghalaya’s concerns receive adequate attention in Parliament and before the Central Government. According to Sangma, his election is not merely a personal achievement but a responsibility to represent the aspirations and hopes of the people of Meghalaya.
