Shillong, Feb 18: Home Minister, James K Sangma said that the stand of the National People’s Party (NPP) to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 has not changed.
“The party will continue to oppose if the government re-introduces the Bill. We are very clear in our stand that the amendment bill is very harmful to the entire North Eastern Region. No matter what, we are going to oppose the bill,†Sangma said on the sidelines of a function on Monday.
The NDA government has failed to pass the Bill in Rajya Sabha last week following protest from various political parties and civil society groups.
“The people of the region stood united and fought against it. Therefore, we will continue to oppose if the bill is brought back,†the NPP leader said.
He also said that Chief Minister and NPP national president, Conrad K Sangma had made it clear that they would break ties with the BJP-led NDA if the CAB is passed.
