Shillong, Mar 20: Jaiñtia Youth Federation president, Poipynhun Majaw was killed and his body was found from a place near the deputy commissioner’s office in Khliehriat, the district headquarters of East Jaintia Hills.
Khliehriat is about 100 km from here.
Police said that Majaw, 38, was killed and a metal wrench suspected to have been used to kill him was also found next to his body.
Preliminary investigation suggested that Majaw was hit on the head with the object which led to his death.
The JYF under the leadership of Majaw has been opposing expansion of a cement company operating in Jaiñtia Hills region.
Majaw had earlier filed a public interest litigation against eight cement plants for allegedly operating in East Jaiñtia Hills district in violation the Forest Act, 1980.
Under Majaw’s leadership, the federation had also staged protest with regards to misappropriation of public funds by the former chief executive member of Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council, M. Rymbai in 2014. This led to a tussle between the JYF and the former JHADC chief.
Meanwhile, the Jaiñtia Youth Federation has demanded immediate inquiry into the murder of its leader and nab those involved in the crime.
Condemnation also poured in from various quarters and demanded that culprits be nabbed and punished according to law.
Condemning the killing of Majaw, the Civil Society Women’s Organization demanded that a high level inquiry be instituted to inquire into the incident.
