KHADC moves to implement ILP within its jurisdiction

Shillong, Sept 25: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has decided to bring a resolution in its upcoming special session and passed the proposed resolution for implementing Inner Line Permit (ILP) to check influx and illegal immigration.

KHADC Chief Executive Member, H.S. Shylla told reporters after a meeting of the Executive Committee here on Tuesday that the Council would pass an official resolution to urge the Governor to notify the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873.

“Once it is notified, it means ILP will be implemented,” Shylla said.

He also claimed that the powers to implement the ILP system rested with the autonomous district councils which included the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).

“We want to implement the ILP through the Village and Town Police of the Council,” he said while stating that this would ensure that the Council has its own manpower dedicated for checking influx and illegal immigration within its jurisdiction.

According to Shylla, the then CEM of the Council, late Hoping Stone Lyngdoh had passed the Village and Town Police, 1991 but the Bill was returned to the Council by the state government.

“We have decided to further fine tune the Bill to ensure that it gets the approval of the governor at the earliest,” he said.
