KSU asks Govt to set up detoxification centre, psychiatrist at Nongstoiñ Civil Hospital

Shillong, July 16: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has asked the state government to set up a detoxification centre and a psychiatrist at the Nongstoiñ civil hospital in West Khasi Hills District for providing treatment to drug users.

A delegation of the KSU Nongstoiñ Circle led by its president Franklin Syiemïong also met Health minister AL Hek on Tuesday, seeking his intervention into the matter.

After the meeting, Syiemïong told reporters that the detoxification centre would serve as a short-term solution to help drug users to recover.

“We want the state government to consider setting up of a rehabilitation centre, which can provide better treatment to our youths,” he said.

The KSU leader said that as per information collected from police, there are over 600 drug users mostly school dropouts, adding there are also children under the age group of 16-17 years.

“Though many have expressed that they want to recover, but they cannot afford to get treatment in good rehabilitation centres,” he said.
