Liquor worth around ₹75,000 seized; team reports 2,625-litre consignment from makeshift storage facility

Shillong, August 17: A joint inspection by Excise officials and police, accompanied by representatives of the Food Safety Department, MUDA, Shillong Municipal Board and Labour Department, led to the seizure of an alleged illegal liquor consignment from Saw Furlong in Shillong.

Members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Shillong Mihngi Circle, were also present during the inspection, which covered restaurants, food outlets and other commercial establishments in the area.

The inspection team checked licences, documents, food-safety standards, sanitation and compliance with applicable government regulations.

During the inspection of a secluded location, officials reportedly discovered a makeshift storage facility allegedly being used to stock and sell liquor and beer without a valid licence. The Excise Department subsequently seized the consignment.

According to information available, the seized liquor was estimated to be worth approximately ₹75,000, with the reported quantity totalling 2,625 litres.

The operation followed an earlier inspection by the KSU in the area. The union had raised concerns over the alleged unauthorised sale of liquor, warning that such activities could have an adverse impact on public order and the well-being of residents.

KSU leaders also criticised the State Government over what they alleged was a failure to prevent unauthorised construction in Saw Furlong. The union further alleged that some migrant workers were residing in the area without the required documentation.

The KSU urged the concerned departments to conduct regular inspections of restaurants, shops, warehouses, residential structures and other commercial establishments in the locality.

It also called for legal action against anyone found selling liquor without a valid licence, occupying unauthorised structures or residing in the area without valid documentation.

The KSU Shillong Mihngi Circle said it would continue to monitor developments and cooperate with the authorities to curb unlawful activities and maintain peace and order in Saw Furlong and adjoining areas.
