Shillong, Nov 30: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has demanded deletion from electoral roll and Aadhaar database the name of a person, who, the villagers were not aware of his stay in the village, but mysteriously managed to get a residential certificate.
A delegation of the KSU-Mawryngkneng Circle under the leadership of its president Reallystar Nongspung on Thursday met East Khasi Hills District deputy commissioner Peter S. Dkhar and BDO of Mawryngkneng C&RD Block and submitted a complaint on the matter.
In a statement issued here, Nongspung said the Union has detected the person identified as Pappu Das (31) son of Heminder Das who was enrolled under the electoral rolls and Aadhaar from Pommura village with the knowledge of the Dorbar Shnong and its members.
He alleged that after conducting an inquiry on the matter, the Union found out that the person has managed to receive his EPIC and Aadhaar number by producing a residential certificate which was illegally issued by a village chief.
“In view of this, we have demanded from the authorities concerned to immediately delete his (Pappu) name from electoral rolls and also cancel the Aadhaar registration after lodging a complaint as per provision of the law,” Nongspung said.
Meanwhile, the KSU also issued a strong warning against head of the village and also political agents, who are attempting to help “outsiders” in getting EPIC through illegal means in order to increase vote banks of someone else without thinking about the threat it poses to the indigenous community.
“We also appealed to all village heads to refrain from issuing residential certificate to people coming from outside the state as it will encourage them to eat away benefits of the tribal people,” he said while also urging the booth level officers (BLOs) to keep a check on the matter.
