Shillong, July 15: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) North Khasi Hills District (NKHD) Unit on Wednesday claimed to have intercepted a private vehicle allegedly involved in transporting illegal drugs at Umsning before handing over the suspects and the vehicle to the police for further investigation.

According to the KSU, the operation was conducted by its Organising Committee under the leadership of Organising Secretary Jester Nongbet following specific intelligence inputs about the movement of a vehicle suspected of transporting narcotics.

The union alleged that the vehicle was fitted with fake or incorrect registration number plates in an attempt to avoid detection by law enforcement agencies.

KSU further claimed that its members uncovered an alleged drug trafficking network involving individuals from outside Meghalaya along with a few Khasi youths who were allegedly working as couriers and suppliers of illegal drugs within the state.

After maintaining surveillance for several hours, KSU members intercepted the vehicle and detained the occupants. The union alleged that the accused had been using Umsning and other parts of Ri-Bhoi district as transit routes for trafficking drugs to various locations.

Following the interception and preliminary questioning, the KSU handed over the vehicle and the detained individuals to the Umsning Police Station for investigation and necessary legal action.

The union urged law enforcement agencies to take stringent action against those involved in the illegal drug trade, stating that drug trafficking poses a serious threat to society and the future of the youth.

Police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident. The allegations made by the KSU are subject to investigation.
