Shillong, September 8: The Eastern West Khasi Hills District Wrestling Association, Mairang, produced an impressive performance at the 2nd Meghalaya State Wrestling Championship 2026, winning 11 medals—two gold, two silver and seven bronze.

Organised by the Wrestling Association of Meghalaya (WAM), the championship was held at the Lady Keane Basketball Court in Shillong from September 3 to 5.

Emmarica Lyngdoh Mawlong won gold in the 39-kg Under-14 category, while Rosababel Warjri claimed gold in the 42-kg Under-14 category.

The two silver medals were secured by Joviality Lyngdoh Kynshi in the 50-kg Under-18 category and Hazel Christina Ripnar in the 50-kg Senior Women’s category.

The seven bronze medallists were Azarias Lyngdoh Mawlong (30-kg Under-11), Dephibasok Mawhyllup (50-kg Under-14), Badarisha Lyngdoh Kynshi and Diana Marbaniang (50-kg Under-18), Phidari Rani (53-kg Under-18), Iaphilarityngkai Basaiawmoit (53-kg Senior Women’s) and Malvin L. Marshillong (57-kg Senior Men’s).

The team is coached by Khraw Jutang Kharsyntiew, who also serves as president of the Eastern West Khasi Hills District Wrestling Association. The wrestlers train at the Khadsawphra MMA Dojo in Mairang.

Expressing pride in the team’s achievement, Kharsyntiew said many of the wrestlers are still at an early stage of their careers. He praised their talent, dedication, discipline and hard work, which have already produced encouraging results at the state level.

He also thanked the Wrestling Association of Meghalaya for providing young athletes with an opportunity to compete at the state championship, saying such platforms give wrestlers valuable competitive exposure while helping identify and nurture talent for higher-level tournaments.

The association views the medal haul as an important step in preparing promising athletes for the 2027 National Games, which Meghalaya is scheduled to host.

The 11-medal performance marks an encouraging milestone for wrestling in Mairang and Eastern West Khasi Hills, highlighting the growing potential of young athletes from the district.
