Shillong, May 6: Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar on Wednesday lauded the MDA Government, led by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, for its sustained efforts to promote tourism and generate livelihood opportunities across Meghalaya.

Speaking to reporters after attending a tourism programme at Umiam, Marngar described tourism as a key driver of economic growth and said the government has taken significant steps to strengthen the sector.

He noted that the Mawhati constituency possesses several potential tourism sites which, if developed in a planned manner, could benefit local communities and create employment opportunities, particularly for the youth.

Emphasising the importance of inclusive development, the MLA stressed that tourism initiatives should actively involve village communities, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders to ensure that benefits reach the grassroots level.

Marngar also underscored the need for continued investment in infrastructure, including roads, connectivity and basic amenities, stating that such improvements are crucial to attracting more visitors to the state.

He added that the initiatives undertaken by the present government reflect a strong commitment to positioning Meghalaya as a leading tourism destination while simultaneously supporting local livelihoods.
