Shillong, August 29: Mawiong Parish began its campaign in the Under-35 Inter-Parish Football Tournament on a winning note, defeating Pynthorumkhrah Parish 4–2 at Madan Heh, Phudmuri, on Saturday.

The tournament is organised by the Synjuk Ki Seng Rangbah Katholik, Shillong Archdiocese Zone I, and features teams from six parishes—Mawlai, Mawiong, Mawtawar, Mawprem, Mawkhar and Pynthorumkhrah.

The competition is being conducted in two categories: Under-35 and 40 years and above.

Jim Reeves Marweiñ, IAS, attended the inaugural programme as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, he reflected on the organisation’s motto, “Ieid, Shakri bad Ïalap” (Love, Serve and Evangelise), and emphasised the important role of men as protectors and pillars of their families and society.

In the opening Under-35 fixture, Mawiong produced a strong attacking display to secure a 4–2 victory over Pynthorumkhrah.

Aldo Max Nengnong, wearing jersey No. 2, was the star of the match for Mawiong, scoring twice. S. Syiem (No. 6) and Dapjorki Dkhar scored one goal each to complete Mawiong’s tally.

Pynthorumkhrah responded with goals from Aibha Mynsong (No. 9) and Donald Nongsiej (No. 11), but Mawiong held on to claim all three points in the tournament opener.

Before kick-off, Rev. Fr. Telesphoros Nonglang, Parish Priest of Mawlai, offered the opening prayer and blessed the tournament.

The inaugural programme was attended by Synjuk president Stenis Nongkynrih, secretary Onnestar Kharbani, other office-bearers and members of the participating parishes.
