Shillong, Jul 30: Two-time champions Mawlai FC produced a scintillating second-half display to thrash Laitkor 5-0 in the Shillong Premier League (SPL) 2026 at the SSA Stadium on Thursday, recording the biggest victory of the season so far.
After a tightly contested and goalless first half, Mawlai transformed the game after the break with an attacking masterclass, scoring five goals in the space of 37 minutes.
Samlang Rympei broke the deadlock in the 49th minute before Fairming Suting doubled the advantage just three minutes later. Wadshwa Latoo made it 3-0 in the 55th minute, completing a devastating six-minute spell that effectively ended the contest.
Basuklang Bina added the fourth goal in the 71st minute, with his deflected effort finding its way over the line, while substitute Bajiedlang Rangslang sealed the emphatic victory with a powerful strike in the 86th minute.
The opening 45 minutes had suggested another closely fought encounter, with the league having already witnessed three 1-0 matches and one 1-1 draw. However, Mawlai emerged from the interval with renewed intensity under the guidance of head coach Hering Shangpliang, dominating possession with crisp passing and intelligent movement.
The breakthrough came moments after the restart when Damangbhalang Chyne’s effort struck the crossbar before Samlang reacted quickest to force the loose ball home.
Mawlai maintained relentless pressure, with Fairming finishing calmly after latching onto a through ball before Robertson Khongriah’s precise cross from the left was tapped in by Wadshwa to make it 3-0.
Despite easing off the tempo later in the game, Mawlai continued to create chances. Basuklang’s effort took a fortunate deflection before crossing the line, and Bajiedlang capped the performance with a superb solo run and powerful finish.
Laitkor attempted to respond in the second half and managed a couple of efforts on goal, but none seriously tested Mawlai goalkeeper Lambhamiki Lamare.
The next Shillong Premier League fixture will be played on August 4, when Sawmer take on Rangdajied United at the SSA Stadium at 4:00 PM. Sawmer are looking to recover after a 1-0 defeat to defending champions Langsning in the opening match, while Rangdajied United will aim for their first win after drawing 1-1 with Meghalaya Police.
