Shillong, Oct 24: Casual employees of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) on Tuesday pursued their various demands with Labour Minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh and decided to suspend black flag and lunch time agitations they had undertaken since October 11.
Casual workers of the MeECL under the banner of MeECL Progressive Workers’ Union (MPWU) has been agitating for their constitutionally mandated labour rights which include equal pay for equal work, Provident Fund, ESI, Maternity benefit etc, which have been denied to them.
The MPWU apprised the Labour Minister the demands of more than 1500 longstanding casual workers doing work of regular nature.
The Minister then deputed the Labour Commissioner to examine the demands in consultation with the MPWU and assured that she would review the situation within twenty days.
“In light of this, the Union has decided to temporarily suspend its black flag and lunch time agitations and wait for the outcome of this process,” the MPWU said.
