Shillong, September 15: The Meghalaya unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced a month-long public service campaign to commemorate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 25 years in public office.

Addressing the media, Meghalaya BJP president Rikman G. Momin said the nationwide campaign will begin on September 17, coinciding with Modi’s 76th birthday, and continue until October 17.

October 7 will mark 25 years since Modi assumed public office as the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001.

Momin said the Meghalaya BJP would use the occasion to translate the spirit of Seva into activities aimed at benefiting communities across the State, particularly farmers and economically weaker sections.

The campaign will focus on community service, healthcare, environmental protection, youth participation and recognition of frontline workers.

One of the major programmes, “Light a Candle of Blessings,” will be held across Meghalaya from 6 pm on September 17. BJP workers and supporters will light candles as a gesture of appreciation and blessings for the Prime Minister.

The party will also organise district-level inter-school drawing competitions on September 26, giving students an opportunity to express their ideas and aspirations for India through art.

As part of the campaign, Anganwadi workers and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) will be felicitated for their contribution to healthcare, nutrition and welfare services, particularly for women and children.

Blood-donation and health camps will also be organised at various locations to promote voluntary blood donation and health awareness.

Tree-plantation drives, cleanliness campaigns and community-service activities will form other key components of the month-long programme. Momin said the objective was to promote a sustained culture of cleanliness, civic responsibility and community participation rather than limit activities to symbolic one-day events.

The BJP’s Kisan Morcha will conduct outreach programmes in villages and party units to interact with farmers, explain government schemes and identify issues affecting the agricultural community.

“The Kisan Morcha will reach out to villages to understand the difficulties faced by farmers. The party will examine these concerns and place suitable proposals before the government so that appropriate solutions can be worked out,” Momin said.

He said the campaign was aimed at taking the message of public service beyond political platforms and directly to the grassroots.

“The best way to commemorate the Prime Minister’s 25 years in public service is not merely through celebrations, but by serving society and making a positive difference in people’s lives,” Momin said.

Momin appealed to BJP workers, students, women, youth, healthcare workers and members of the public to participate in the programmes.

On reports that some Meghalaya legislators may join the BJP, Momin said no date had been fixed and the State unit had not received any official communication from the party’s central leadership.

He said the party was currently focused on finalising the schedule and arrangements for the month-long campaign. Central BJP leaders are also expected to participate in some programmes, although details have not yet been confirmed.
