Shillong, June 20: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said Meghalaya is steadily emerging as a model state for development, innovation and good governance in the Northeast region.

Speaking during her visit to Meghalaya, the Finance Minister highlighted the state’s progress in key sectors including infrastructure, public services and socio-economic development, attributing the growth to coordinated efforts between the Centre and the State Government.

She noted that Meghalaya has benefitted from several flagship schemes of the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, resulting in improved connectivity, healthcare facilities, educational infrastructure and livelihood opportunities.

“The pace of development witnessed in Meghalaya reflects the strong partnership between the Centre and the State Government. Investments in roads, airports, healthcare institutions and educational infrastructure are transforming the state and creating new opportunities for its people,” Sitharaman said.

The Union Finance Minister stressed that human resource development remains central to sustainable growth. She called for greater focus on education, skill development and youth empowerment, stating that equipping young people with modern skills is essential for their participation in the evolving economy.

Sitharaman also emphasised the importance of public participation in the development process, environmental protection, and effective utilisation of government welfare schemes aimed at improving livelihoods and economic well-being.

Highlighting the state’s economic potential, she said sectors such as tourism, agriculture, rural enterprises and entrepreneurship could significantly contribute to job creation and long-term growth.

Expressing confidence in Meghalaya’s future, the Finance Minister said the state is well-positioned to become one of the fastest-growing regions in the country if the current momentum of development and cooperation between stakeholders continues.

She reiterated the Central Government’s commitment to supporting Meghalaya and the Northeast through sustained investments and development-oriented policies aimed at ensuring inclusive and balanced regional growth.
