SHILLONG, APR 11: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday announced that the state government is working towards establishing dedicated homes and “active ageing centres” for the elderly across different parts of the state.
The Chief Minister made the announcement after inaugurating the Nabon Memorial Home at Mawiong Rim, an initiative of the Jingiaseng Kynthei Shillong Ri Lum Presbytery.
Highlighting the vision behind the initiative, Sangma said the government aims to promote “active and happy ageing” by creating spaces where senior citizens can remain engaged, socially connected, and emotionally supported.
“I am very keen to see how we can have these active ageing centres and collaborate with institutions like the Nabon Memorial Home for the benefit of our elderly and senior citizens,” he said.
The Chief Minister noted that the home, named after the first Christian woman among the Khasi community, carries deep cultural and spiritual significance. He said it reflects the values of service, compassion, and care for the needy—principles central to Christian teachings.
Sangma also emphasized the role of Anganwadi centres in supporting these initiatives. He said these centres, which play a key role in early childhood development under Mission 1000 Days, can act as bridges between children and the elderly.
“The engagement between the young and the old will create a happy environment in society. Children will learn to respect elders, while elders can impart life values and emotionally connect with them,” he said.
He added that such centres are envisioned as intergenerational spaces—vibrant hubs where both seniors and children can interact and benefit mutually.
Reflecting on societal changes, Sangma observed that while tribal communities traditionally cared for their elders, modernisation and urbanisation have led to a gradual shift away from this practice.
“As a community, society, church, and government, we must come together to address this issue,” he said.
The Chief Minister also announced financial assistance of ₹25 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund for the Nabon Memorial Home.
The facility aims to support widowed, abandoned, and destitute women who lack adequate shelter and emotional support. Its broader vision is to provide a safe, inclusive, and compassionate environment where women can age with dignity.
