Shillong, Nov 21: Lottery will be revived in Meghalaya in order to generate revenue.
Chief minister Mukul Sangma told reporters that the government would prefer paper lottery to online lottery.
“A national bidding process to select a distributor will be floated soon. We are looking for a distributor that can compete with the products offered by other lottery firms across the country. The lottery will come under the Lotteries (Regulation) Rules, 2010, notified by the Union home ministry,” he said.
In 2001, the Meghalaya government had introduced online lottery and signed an agreement with a firm, MS Associates, to run the lottery with a guaranteed Rs 3 crore for the exchequer in the first year.
In 2005, the company stopped operating the online lottery and did not pay dues to the state government.
