Meghalaya High court slams Central Public Work Department (CPWD)

Shillong,May 24: The Meghalaya High Court has issued show cause notice to Central Public Work Department (CPWD) for the delay in repairing the building of JNV School in East Khasi Hills District.

In an order issued on Tuesday, the High Court said,“Let notice be issued to the respondent No. 5 to show cause as to why appropriate directions be not issued against CPWD as regards the pending repair work of the school building. Notices be made returnable in two weeks.”

The direction was issued after a hearing conducted on a petition filed by the Meghalaya State Commissioner for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR) chairperson Meena Kharkongor.

During the hearing, counsel, N Mozika appearing for respondent No. 6 pointed out that the repair work of the building in question, which was assigned to the CPWD way back in the month of August, 2016, is not progressing satisfactorily and there is an apparent laxity on the part of the CPWD.

Earlier, the Government Advocate, S Sen Gupta informed that the work of laying the requisite pipeline has commenced and is likely to be completed within a week.

However, the Court said that the work in question should have been completed by now adding but looking to the submissions made, we grant further time to the respondent – State to ensure completion of this work at the earliest.

It has also directed to list the matter after two weeks with complete report.

It may be mentioned here that there has been a delay to make operational the new building of JNV School, which was constructed 10 years ago.

The campus of the JNV at Mawphlang is considered to be one of the biggest in the North East region, which the Ministry of Human Resource Development had sanctioned Rs 30 crore for its construction.
