Shillong, Apr 2: Meghalaya has achieved a significant milestone with its handwoven, handspun, naturally dyed, and organically produced fabric, Ryndia, along with Meghalaya Handloom Products, being granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

This recognition is a testament to the state’s rich cultural heritage and its commitment to promoting unique products and immersive experiences.

The Department of Textiles, Government of Meghalaya, led the initiative, working closely with NABARD and Dr. Rajnikanth, over the past four years.

The journey began with the official recognition of Umden-Diwon as Meghalaya’s first Eri Silk village on February 12, 2021.

A delegation comprising Textiles Department officials, the Meghalaya Ryndia Producers Association, and weavers from the Silk village actively supported the GI application at the final Consultative GI Group meeting in Kolkata on November 20, 2024.

The GI recognition for Ryndia and Meghalaya Khasi Handloom Products is expected to boost the state’s economy and promote its cultural heritage.

With this achievement, Meghalaya is poised to leverage its soft power and showcase its unique products and experiences to the world.
