Shillong, Mar 12: Meghalaya’s Tura Government Medical College project has reached a significant milestone, with 75 percent of the construction work completed, according to Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh.

The project, situated on 99 acres of donated land, has received a total financial sanction of Rs 189 crore, with Rs 185.65 crore already released to the Project Management Consultant.

Replying during the Question Hour today, Lyngdoh highlighted the project’s progress, which is an academic block is 75 percent complete, residential quarters, are 20-99 percent complete, girls’ and boys’ Hostels, are 55 percent complete, retaining wall is 85 percent complete and the boundary wall is 30 percent complete.

The Health Minister also informed that the project’s financial progress stands at 81 percent of the total administrative approval amount of Rs 234.89 crore.

Lyngdoh clarified that the 75 percent completion status refers to the physical progress of the academic and accommodation blocks.

Meanwhile, opposition legislator Dr. Mukul Sangma raised concerns about the project’s timeline and the teaching hospital’s readiness.

Lyngdoh assured the House that the government is working diligently to ensure the project’s timely completion, to start the first MBBS session by the 2026-27 academic session.

The government is also taking steps to secure National Medical Commission (NMC) approval through a spot inspection.

Lyngdoh acknowledged the aspirations of the people of Garo Hills and assured that no effort would be spared to make the institution a reality, contributing to the region’s academic and healthcare landscape.
