Shillong, July 7: NCP Meghalaya unit president and legislator, Sanbor Shullai on Friday did not meet NDA presidential nominee, Ram Nath Kovind as he was ‘too busy.’
Shullai, who is the MLA of NCP from South Shillong constituency, had told reporters on Thursday that he would meet Kovind, who came to meet legislators of the National People’s Party (NPP) and some legislators of the United Democratic Party (UDP) at Orchid Lake Resort, Umïam on Friday.
However, Shullai was not at the campaign of the NDA presidential candidate.
Shullai did not also attend the meeting of UPA presidential nominee, Meira Kumar when she came here to campaign on July 5.
In a statement issued by A. Marweiñ, secretary of the Monitoring-cum-Implementation Committee (MCIC) of South Shillong Assembly constituency, said that Shullai could not attend the meeting of MLAs addressed by Kumar as he was attending a hearing at the NGT Eastern Zone Bench at Rajarghat New Town, Kolkata.
He also clarified that Shullai did not attend the meeting of the NDA’s presidential nominee with MLAs at Umiam on Friday because of the fact that he (Shullai) was attending an inspection in the constituency MCIC members from 8:30 am till 10 am regarding renovation/repairing of PWD roads/drains.
“Thereafter, he attended a meeting of the RLSSCO at 10:15 am at Bishnupur regarding preparation for the felicitation programme, the 14th Meritorious Award for Students 2017. He also attended a meeting at 11:00 am held at his residential office with members of the Lumparing Sports Club/members of the Laban Sports Club regarding the ongoing Shillong League Football Tournament organized by the Shillong Sports Association,” the statement said.
Marweiñ also said that Shullai also attended another meeting with members of the Greater Laban Community Development Society regarding preparation for felicitation of the pass-out trainees of “Shubham Skill Development Centre” Rilbong, Shillong till 3:30 pm, and then attended his office at the Main Secretariat at around 4:30 pm, and had a meeting with Urban Affairs director till 5:30 pm.
During his, the NDA presidential candidate (Kovind) was accompanied by BJP national general secretary, Ram Madhav, Union Minister for Rural Development, Narendra Singh Tomar, NEDA chairman, Himanta Biswa Sarma and NPP national president and NPP’s Lok Sabha MP from Tura, Conrad K. Sangma.
Kovind garnered support from MPs and MLAs of the State in presence of BJP State president, Shibun Lyngdoh and other office bearers of the Sate BJP.
The meeting was chaired by Conrad and the NDA candidate spoke at length about the dignity of the office of the President and uphold the sanctity of the Constitution of India once elected.
The MLAs present include four from UDP, and 2 from the NPP.
The State BJP said that a good number of other MLAs had conveyed their messages giving support to the NDA Presidential candidate though they could not attend the meeting.
