Shillong, June 29: The North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) has hailed the decision of the University administration to set up a committee to prevent and redress sexual harassment of women employees and students.
In a statement issued on Thursday, NEHUSU president, Napoleon S. Mawphniang informed that the formation of the Internal Complaints’ Committee (ICC) was recently notified in compliance with the UGC notification issued on May 2, 2016.
He also appealed to the committee members to work judiciously and serve the interests of the employees, students and scholars in the University, irrespective of gender.
Stating that the Union has been actively pushing for the implementation of the UGC notification, he expressed serious concern over the lack of proper internal mechanisms to prevent sexual harassment of students and scholars in the university, as several cases (reported and unreported) were seen in the recent past.
On inclusion of student representatives to the ICC, Mawphniang said the Union would request the administration to expedite the process as soon as possible.
He however said that the NEHUSU is also expressing displease with the administration as it fails to officially communicate to the Union regarding the setting up of the ICC. “We only came to know from the university website,” he said while stating that the Union will be closely monitoring the functioning of the ICC as per the UGC regulation.
