NIT Meghalaya gets another Rs 314 crore to complete construction of permanent campus at Sohra

Shillong, Jan 29: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Meghalaya will get Rs 314 crore more from the Centre to complete the construction of the permanent campus at Sohra.

The Centre would sanction another Rs 314 crore for early completion of the NIT at Sohra.

Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Wednesday said that the matter was raised before the Union Human Resource Development Minister during a meeting held in New Delhi recently.

” I hope that once we receive this fund, construction of the NIT will complete so that the institute will start functioning from its permanent campus at Sohra,” he said.

During the Winter Session in December last year, Shillong MP, Vincent H Pala had also raised in Lok Sabha over the delay to complete the NIT at Sohra and fund allocated and released during the last three years.

Pala raised specific queries on the status of NIT Meghalaya and specific plans to improve the condition of the institute.

In his reply, Union Human Resources Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal informed that the Ministry of HRD had released and allocated funds of Rs 70 crore in 2017-18, Rs 48.78 crore in 2018-19 and Rs 46.36 crore in 2019-20 for the NIT in Meghalaya during the last three financial years.

Pokhriyal also informed that the Ministry of HRD has from time to time released grants to NIT Meghalaya to meet their expenditure and also sanctioned the requisite number of faculty and non faculty positions to the institute for its smooth functioning.

NIT Meghalaya is functioning from its present temporary campus at Laitumkhrah in Shillong.

The NIT, Meghalaya was established in 2010 as one of the 30 NITs in the country and it was an “Institute of National Importance” under the NIT Act, 2007 (as amended in 2012).
