Shillong, October 19: National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Dr. D. R. L. Nonglait has identified coal mining, the demand for Khasi language inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, the Inner Line Permit (ILP), tourism, agriculture and livelihood concerns as key priorities he would pursue in Parliament if elected in the Shillong Lok Sabha by-election.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Nonglait said he was awaiting the Election Commission of India’s notification before filing his nomination. The by-election will fill the vacancy caused by the death of sitting MP Dr. Ricky A. J. Syngkon.

Nonglait said the demand for ILP should not be considered unattainable, pointing to support from various political parties and the unanimous resolution passed by all 60 members of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. He stressed the need for continued public engagement to take the demand forward.

On coal mining, Nonglait said he would raise the concerns of the sector in Parliament if elected. However, he said he would first examine the scope and conditions of any reported relief from the Union Coal Ministry before drawing conclusions.

His remarks come amid political discussions over the BJP’s growing strength in Meghalaya following the entry of eight UDP legislators into the party and claims of a possible easing of restrictions on coal mining.

Describing mining as a complex issue, Nonglait said any proposed relief needed careful scrutiny, particularly in terms of the conditions attached to it. He also emphasised the need to consult miners and mine owners, noting that the developments might not yet have been communicated clearly to those directly affected.

He said he would study the matter in greater detail before taking a firm position.

Nonglait also reiterated his commitment to pursuing the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, along with promoting tourism, agriculture and livelihood opportunities.

Describing his candidature as a significant responsibility, Nonglait said the encouragement and support he had received from the public had strengthened his determination to contest the by-election.
