North Shillong MLA urges contractors to be vigilant while engaging labourers

Shillong, Sept 03: The lone Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) legislator Adelbert Nongrum has urged the contractors and other traders to be vigilant while engaging labourers from outside the state.

“They should not be happy to engage cheap labourers, who are willing to work at any rate just to get a chance to enter the state,” Nongrum, who is the MLA of North Shillong constituency said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

The North Shillong MLA also asserted the need to properly check documents produced by such labourers as this can also help to prevent the illegal entry by immigrants into the state.

He said the state has to be watchful since 19 lakh persons have been excluded from National Register of Citizens (NRC) list published by the Assam government and that they may try to enter and settle in the state.

Lamenting that Meghalaya does not have effective mechanisms in place to address the concerns, Nongrum however appeal to the traditional institutions to play their important role in defending the state from silent invasion of outsiders.
