SHILLONG, JUN 11: Deputy Chief Minister and NPP national vice president Sniawbhalang Dhar on Thursday voiced strong optimism about the party’s prospects in the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha bypoll, attributing the momentum to the work of grassroots workers across Meghalaya.
Addressing reporters, Dhar said the party’s confidence stemmed from public support and the efforts of local units. “We are very confident of winning this time with the support of our people. From the party’s side, we have to work hard. I am very thankful to all units and different levels across constituencies. The NPP units have worked very hard. So, it is a very positive sign for the coming by-election,” he stated.
Responding to queries on the absence of a woman candidate, Dhar said the NPP’s candidate selection was not a top-down decision. He explained that the party considered inputs from all 36 constituencies before finalizing Dr. DRL Nonglait as its nominee.
“That you can ask them. For the NPP, we never decide from the top. We always listen to the views and suggestions from all units of the 36 constituencies. They recommended Dr DRL Nonglait and we have to accept it,” he said.
Dhar also acknowledged reports of VPP supporters moving toward the NPP, particularly in the Khasi-Jaintia belt.
He claimed the trend reflected growing realization among voters.
“Yes, I have seen that. Especially in Jaintia Hills, they are down very much. Even in Khasi Hills, every day the numbers are decreasing across the Khasi-Jaintia region as people are realizing,” he added.
