Shillong, Nov 20: National People’s Party (NPP) national president, and Meghalaya Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma said that in a situation of a hung assembly, his party with few numbers of MLAs would play a very important role in the formation of coalition government in Mizoram.
The NPP leader made this statement as he arrived in Mizoram to campaign for NPP candidates in the upcoming Assembly polls to be held on November 28.
In the 40-member Assembly, the NPP is fielding candidates in nine Assembly seats.
Conrad arrived in Aizawl on Tuesday. In the next three days, he will address election rallies at Vairengte, Kolasib, Kawnpui and Serchhip.
“NPP has been working tirelessly in different parts of the region to champion the cause of the people as envisioned by our founder, late P.A. Sangma. The people of Mizoram have accepted the party and we are seeing good response. We are confident the trend NPP will play a formidable role as we expect a hung assembly in the State,†he said, in a statement issued on Tuesday evening.
The Meghalaya Chief Minister said that NPP party has put up candidates in constituencies, where the response and chance of winning are very high.
“We are a new party in Mizoram and we want to make an impact in a positive way. We are optimistic that the results in most constituencies will be in our favour. We are focusing on few seats as part of our strategy. In a situation of hung Assembly, the NPP with few numbers would be able to play a very important role in the formation of government,†Conrad said.
“We are fighting on our own and have no alliance or understanding with any political party. We have our own identity and ideology as a political party. In the past elections too, we had no alliance with any political party. We believe in propagating the message of our party to the people of Mizoram. Post elections, we will look at the interest of the State and partner with a party that believes in taking Mizoram forward,†the Meghalaya Chief Minister said.
Stating that the NPP will strengthen its base in Mizoram through this Assembly election, the NPP national president said, “This is our beginning in Mizoram and we will continue to work for the people of Mizoram and for the Northeast with a common goal and agenda to push the agenda of growth and development.â€
