Shillong, September 1: The Meghalaya unit of the National People’s Party (NPP) on Tuesday observed the party’s 14th foundation anniversary at its state headquarters in Shillong, paying tribute to its founder and late former Lok Sabha Speaker, Purno Agitok Sangma.

The occasion also marked Sangma’s 79th birth anniversary. Born on September 1, 1947, P.A. Sangma was widely recognised as one of the country’s prominent tribal leaders and a strong advocate for the rights and aspirations of indigenous communities.

NPP State President and Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, along with senior party leaders and workers, paid floral tribute to the late leader and recalled his contributions to Meghalaya, the tribal communities and the Northeast.

The programme also saw the felicitation of the party’s founding members and families of those associated with the NPP since its formative years. The gesture recognised their dedication and contribution towards building and strengthening the organisation.

Addressing the gathering, Tynsong said the NPP’s growth was rooted in the vision and foundation laid by P.A. Sangma, who had envisioned bringing the people of the Northeast together and ensuring that the voice of tribal communities was heard at the national level.

He said Sangma’s dream and legacy would continue to guide the party, adding that the NPP would work to further amplify the voice of tribal people and protect their rights and interests.

Tynsong urged party leaders, workers and particularly the younger generation to remain committed to Sangma’s principles and ideals. He stressed the importance of honest public service, protection of indigenous interests and equitable development across Meghalaya.

The Deputy Chief Minister said the foundation anniversary was not merely a celebration but also an opportunity for the party to reflect on its journey and renew its commitment to serving the people more effectively.

Party office-bearers, elected representatives, leaders and workers attended the programme and reaffirmed their commitment to carrying forward the vision and principles of Purno A. Sangma.
